Nairobi, Kenya CNN —A man accused of murdering his girlfriend in Boston before fleeing to Kenya has been re-arrested following his escape from a police station in Nairobi nearly a week ago, police said. Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe, 42, was arrested on Tuesday at a relative’s house in Ngong, a suburb of the Kenyan capital, after a tip-off, Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei told CNN. US investigators say he boarded a plane to Kenya shortly after killing his girlfriend on November 1, 2023. Officers released Kang’ethe from his cell and left them alone in an office, from which he then ran off. CNN —The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expanding its infectious disease surveillance program at four major US airports to more than 30 pathogens, including flu, RSV and other respiratory viruses. The program currently operates Covid-19 surveillance at seven major international airports in the United States. The traveler surveillance program was introduced in 2021 when the CDC began collecting nasal swab samples from anonymous international travelers arriving at participating airports who volunteer to get swabbed. The program has collected samples from travelers from more than 135 countries and has sequenced more than 14,000 samples for further analysis. The wastewater program, which was introduced in August 2022, collects wastewater from a single plane using a custom-made collection device.

A new all-business class airline called BermudAir is launching flights to the US on August 31. BermudAir's jets will start service with 88 coach seats before "Aisle Class" is installed in November. CNN —A man was arrested earlier this month at Boston Logan International Airport for allegedly carrying a “vampire straw” in his carry-on luggage. What is a vampire straw? The term “vampire straw” is used to refer to a titanium straw with a pointed edge. Massachusetts police told CNN the straw confiscated from the traveler had been purchased from Szabo Inc., which sells titanium vampire straws for $85. The legality of carrying a vampire straw depends on local knife laws, the TSA’s New England office told CNN in an email.
A commercial pilot told Insider that flight collisions and near-misses on the runway are rare. In recent months, at least five near-misses or plane collisions have occurred on airport runways. Francisco Torres tried to attack a flight attendant with a spoon, the Department of Justice said. A video obtained by Inside Edition shows passengers tackling Torres to the ground and subduing him. When a flight attendant confronted him about tampering with the door, Torres got agitated and started ranting, the statement added. When he's stopped by another flight attendant, Torres is seen lunging at the man with the spoon. This prompts at least nine passengers to jump up and help the flight attendant tackle Torres to the ground, the video shows.

No injuries were reported, but the Federal Aviation Administration told Insider it is investigating the event. A man was arrested and charged after officials say he tried to stab a flight attendant on a United flight. Francisco Severo Torres told authorities he made a weapon out of a broken metal spoon. Passengers and flight crew were eventually able to tackle and restrain Torres. A flight attendant investigated and found the handle had been moved toward the unlocked position, prosecutors said. Investigators later determined that the metal object Torres used to attack the flight attendant was a metal spoon that had the bowl broken off, according to prosecutors.
BOSTON, March 6 (Reuters) - A United Airlines (UAL.O) passenger has been arrested after trying to open an emergency exit door during a flight on Sunday from Los Angeles to Boston and then trying to stab a flight attendant in the neck, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday. Passengers tackled Francisco Severo Torres, 33, after the attempted stabbing and the flight crew helped restrain him prior the plane landing at Boston Logan International Airport, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said that about 45 minutes before the flight landed in Boston, the flight crew received an alarm in the cockpit that a door between the first class and coach sections had been disarmed. Torres soon after tried to stab of the flight attendants with a broken metal spoon, hitting him on the neck area three times before Torres was tackled, prosecutors said. Torres was charged with one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.

The FedEx plane, meanwhile, climbed as its crew aborted their landing to help avoid a collision, the FAA said. Air traffic controllers had “noticed another aircraft crossing the runway in front of the departing jetliner,” the FAA said in a statement. Audio recordings detail swift action by an air traffic controller kept the airplanes from colliding as they drew closer.
A JetBlue flight landing at a Massachusetts airport had a "close call" with a private jet, the FAA said. The JetBlue pilot had to take "evasive action" to avoid the private jet on the runway on Monday. "The pilot of the JetBlue aircraft took evasive action and initiated a climb-out as the Learjet crossed the intersection," said the FAA. Two weeks ago, FAA acting administrator Billy Nolen issued a "safety call to action" following recent near-catastrophic "close calls" on runways and other plane incidents.
